I remember my own bridal showers. I had three of them. One from my soon-to-be-family, one from the ladies at church, and one from my girl-friends.
All three equally awkward.
It's not that I didn't appreciate the showers because I definitely did. It was so nice of them to go out of their way to put together those nice parties for me and even nicer to spend their time and money on gifts for the poor newlyweds.
I really did appreciate it more than I can say.
But I inherited a few traits from my mother.
If you had asked me while I was growing up whether I was like my mother, I would have sworn up and down that we were nothing alike. Polar opposites. Like peanut butter and lime juice.
Ewe.
I've never tried those two flavors together and I'm pretty adventurous in the kitchen but I just know deep down in my being that peanut butter and lime juice would never ever work together. Ever.
Although if you do try it, please let me know how that goes for you. I'd be curious to hear if you could stomach it.
Not to mention impressed.
But that's how I would have felt about my mother and myself. Like peanut butter and lime juice. Nothing alike and not meant for mixing.
In recent years however, I've discovered quite a few things I've inherited from my mother. Which I'm definitely okay with because she's a superhero. But one of our similarities is that we really hate the lime-light.
Yeah we don't do well when a group of people, friends or strangers, are devoting their time and attention on us.
Every year my mother swears she won't attend if we try to throw a birthday party for her. And if there is one thing I know about my mother, she doesn't give empty threats. So we throw "un-birthday" parties for her.
We all show up at the same time on the same day with gifts and food and desserts and give mom lots of hugs and just avoid two little words.
"Happy Birthday".
It's working well so far.
I would have really loved to have un-bridal showers.
But I had very much all-about-me-bridal showers. And I felt awkward. But I think I played it off okay.
Last week, my mother got roped into helping someone with a bridal shower. Which means I got roped into helping her help someone with a bridal shower. And no one had any instructions for me or direction as far as desserts.
So that meant cupcakes.
Triple chocolate oreo buttercream cupcakes.
I'm beginning to feel that there is nothing that can't be improved with oreos.
The frosting turned out really really really yummy. Like, lick the spoon, and the bowl, and the beaters, and your fingers yummy. Not that I would have done any of that... (you know I did.)
Honestly I was a little worried that the oreo crumbs would give the frosting a strange texture and sort of steal the show if an annoying way. But that didn't happen at all. The crumbs sort of softened into the frosting after a little while and just lended beautiful oreo flavor without being obnoxiously gritty.
Yeah, I might have taken the easy way with using a boxed cake mix but really, I have no problem with doing that. I mean, real bakeries use boxed mixes all the time as a base for their cakes and pastries. It saves time. And money. Both of which I could use more of.
And I'm all about cutting a few tiny corners if it's gonna get you to a beautiful, tasty, lick-the-spoon-worthy dessert a little bit quicker.
Besides, I added stuff to the cake mix. It's not like I just made the recipe on the back of the box.
And I put oreos on it.
Sheesh.

This sounds absolutely fantastic. I have my sons birthday next week and I am making this. I am going to make this into a cake. Maybe a few small chunks into batter, and crumbs on the size. Thank you. I will let you know.
